Matthijs de Ligt has signed a contract extension with Ajax. The 18-year-old central defender had 24 months left on his former deal but has now put pen to paper on terms to keep him in Amsterdam until 2021.
De Ligt played a pivotal role in the Amsterdammers’ successful Europa League campaign last season, cementing a spot in the starting line-up and forming a strong defensive duo with Colombian sensation Davinson Sánchez.
Speaking to AjaxTV, De Ligt expressed his delight: “It’s a wonderful feeling to be part of this beautiful club for years to come. It was always my intention to stay at Ajax. Having made my debut with Oranje and featuring in the Europa League final, I can be nothing but proud.”
De Ligt has made 28 official first team appearances thus far, scoring 3 goals in the process.
