At just 20 years old, Mika Godts is already making a case that he can become the main man at Ajax in the future, after his superb scoring displays this season.
With 13 goals and eight assists in 22 Eredivisie matches, the Belgian’s form can no longer be ignored in a side that for all intents and purposes, he appears to be carrying.
He arguably draws comparisons to Eden Hazard due to his dribbling ability, low centre of gravity and ability to cut inside from the left wing, though there is much to suggest that he can be converted to a striker as he develops more physically.
Godts has without a doubt been a standout in an Ajax side this season that has largely underperformed and failed to impress, currently sitting fourth in the league and in danger of not qualifying for next season’s Champions League as it stands.
What Godts Offers Ajax
The player certainly resembles someone the club should be looking to build the first team around based on his current form, especially if they can promote a handful of other promising youngsters from De Toekomst, who can look to Godts as the inspiration.
It could be argued that he has stepped into shoes vacated by Mohammed Kudus or Anthony, both of whom departed the club for big money in recent seasons and despite big clubs reportedly eyeing the player, it is understood that he wants to stay in Amsterdam and win trophies.
There is every reason to suggest that he can be the next big star at the club who will likely have plans for his development. His goal-scoring instinct appears sharp and he does have the ability to play through the middle, more likely as a ‘false 9’ at this stage of his career.
His recent goal that opened the scoring against NEC; a game that finished in a draw, was a sign that he is one of the most consistent players at the club this season and that he has the potential to do this on a regular basis and increase his stats further.

To have to shoulder the club’s goal-scoring burden at such a young age is unfair to him, though it appears that he is handling this with great maturity. Veteran striker, Wout Weghorst is some way behind on six, while new summer signing and fellow Belgian Oscar Gloukh (another promising youngster), is on five and starting to show his potential.
Godts Needs Quality Through The Middle
If Godts (for now at least), is to stay on the left, he arguably needs someone more clinical playing through the middle, who can convert the chances he creates, so the club will no doubt be thinking long and hard about that.
Long term, the answer may lie in the Under 23 team (Rayane Bounida springs to mind) who will be expertly stewarded by new coach Oscar Garcia with his highly-trained eye for talent spotting, though the club does need someone now (from next season, at least), who is an upgrade on Weghorst.
Godts has already proved that he can create chances, though a much more clinical frontman is required if the club are to hit the heights that they are no doubt shooting at.
For now though, fans should have high hopes that in Godts, they have a player who can help to steer the club forward.
