Reports of the Spanish media claim that Ajax are set to make a summer loan move for Barcelona’s highly-rated young left-back Jofre Torrents, as new head coach Michel looks to begin a rebuild at the Dutch giants.
Ajax looking to solve a problem position
The move is understandable, as the left side of defence was a problem position for the Dutch giant’s last season.
Owen Wijndal started the season in favour at left-back but was slightly inconsistent and lost his place as right-back Lucas Rosa was selected to play out of position on the left side of defence.
January arrival from Arsenal, Oleksandr Zinchenko, was seen as a potential answer to the problem position, as he joined the club on a short-term contract until the end of the 2025/26 season.
However, the Ukrainian international picked up a serious knee injury in only his second appearance for the Amsterdammers.
The former Manchester City player will become a free agent this summer upon the expiration of his contract, as Ajax do not wish to trigger a clause to extend it.
Torrents could be an ideal solution for everybody
The 19-year-old could well prove the perfect player to solve Ajax’s left-back issue, even if it is only temporarily. Torrents is highly rated in Catalonia.
In fact, when he signed a new contract in May 2025, a release clause of around €400 million was reportedly inserted in the deal
However, he is unlikely to play much first-team football for the Catalan giants, as the Spanish champions already have another academy graduate, Alex Balde, to play in the position.
Although Balde’s Barcelona future seems to be up in the air, Barcelona is likely to go into the market to sign another experienced left-back if Balde does depart this summer.
That would leave Torrents no closer to regular first-team football at the Nou Camp. In the 2025/26 season, the youngster made just four first-team appearances for the Blaugrana at senior level across La Liga, the Copa del Rey, and the UEFA Champions League.
His chances of more first-team football were hampered by an ankle injury that left Torrents sidelined for three months.
A temporary switch for Torrents this summer could well prove the ideal solution for everybody. The youngster should get to play first-team football at a high level, which is exactly what the player and his club want for his development.
Ajax would be signing one of the brightest young defenders in the European game. It would at least temporarily plug their gap at left-back. Assuming that Torrents is unlikely to remain in the long term, it gives the Dutch giants time to seek a long-term solution at left-back.
Ajax and Barcelona have an affinity
When it comes to football relationships, Ajax and Barcelona have one of the closest in the beautiful game. The two clubs’ football philosophies have often gone hand in hand for decades, largely due to the influence of the great Johan Cruyff, who coached at both clubs.
Cruyff’s son Jordi is now the technical director at Ajax. Apart from playing for Barcelona, he also held a similar position to his current role.
Then there are the many players who have played for both teams, including Ronald Koeman, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Marc Overmars, Patrick Kluivert, Frank de Boer and more recently Frenkie de Jong. That’s not to mention the legendary Rinus Michels, who managed both clubs.
All the links suggest that Ajax could well be Jofre Torrents’ next destination, even if only temporarily. If it is, then hopefully the youngster enjoys a successful period with the club from the Dutch capital.
