Arguably, Ajax has one of the most iconic home kits of any football club in Europe, though there are certainly a few who could compete for that title such as Juventus and Real Madrid.
Though like many clubs, it is their away kits which often catch the eye. The purpose of an away kit in football is essentially to be a contrast from your home kit – usually this is the case. Different colour, style, design; for many this has worked well.
Some clubs have had some great away kits over the years; Arsenal’s all-blue one, the year they went unbeaten in the league was particularly eye-catching, while other clubs bring out quirkier away kits; most notably Newcastle United, who whackily went for two shades of yellow.
With that said, Ajax has also had its fair share of interesting away kits over the years, so keep reading to find out which ones make our list.
1989/1990: Retro Vibes
Just wow. Who remembers this? Almost similar to the Croatia national team home kit, but, instead of squares, the pattern was more of a slanted ’T’ in white, red and blue with their TDK sponsor across the middle in red writing.
Certainly creative and interesting, this kit was a talking point in the Dutch league that season especially.
1995/1996: A Subtle Classic
Rather like the club’s home kit, the away version for this season had undercurrents of elegance about it. Umbro certainly did a good job in coming up with something original, yet that worked.
Blue-grey in colour, the club’s crest was at the shirt’s centre-point, while in a creative touch, the club’s sponsor’s lettering – ABN-AMRO was presented vertically down the shirt. Meanwhile, the notable Umbro logo was just to the top right of centre.
2012/2013: What Is Going On Here?
We’re not quite sure what the thought process was behind this one. It seemed a bit ‘all over the place’. Basically this had black all around the outside and the sleeves, which were also adorned with yellow Adidas stripes.
Then the centre of the shirt almost looked like a television screen, with a rising, triangular black bit, with the rest being mainly blue, with the sponsorship text for both Adidas and Aegon yellow. Probably the only good thing about this shirt was the club crest. You would be forgiven for being confused by this.
2024/2025: Bringing ‘Sexy Back’?
It appears that for the 2024/25 season, the club has attempted to embrace the fashion trends, though seemingly, they’ve taken this literally and created something that looks like it would be at home in a Gucci store. What do you even call this design? Pattern?
Well, as long as players don’t start breaking into verse of “I’m too sexy for my shirt”, we should be okay. Anyway, t’s kind of like a mish-mash of blue and grey shells, with all of the text in yellow, which includes the Adidas writing (and stripes on the sleeves), plus the sponsor, Ziggo across the centre. The crest is subtly visible on the top right, in what looks to be some shade of orange. Actually, on reflection, it isn’t too shabby.
