Tougher Start For PSV
Already, PSV may have dropped points by the time that Ajax meet them after what appears, on paper at least, to be a trickier start.
FC Twente away in their second game could present a challenge, while Groningen at home and a trip to play NEC Breda may be a couple of stern tests.
Ajax though, should just be focusing on what they need to do. They are more than capable of winning their first six matches – if they are ahead on points when the two clubs meet, then that’s a nice advantage to have.
Bizarrely, Ajax did the double over PSV last term, despite losing the league to them. A 3-2 victory at home in November was followed up by a 2-0 win in Eindhoven.
No doubt, the trip to the Philips Stadion will be a tough encounter for Ajax – especially if the home side have already lost ground in the title race by that point which means that Ajax will need to be on top of their game.
Could Transfer Activity Dictate Early League Standings?
What could be a deciding factor for both clubs, is making sure that they keep their key players this summer with a number of them bound to be on the radar of bigger European clubs.
In Brian Brobbey, Ajax has one of the brightest Dutch talents in the league, though he could well be the first that any clubs target. However, he hasn’t really done it in front of goal so far, despite having great potential, so it may not be a bad thing to cash in on him to aid recruitment.
PSV will be keen to keep hold of their talents as well. Indeed, winger Johan Bakayoko is believed to be the subject of interest from English Premier League side Newcastle United and he would be a big loss.
What Other Dates Stand Out?
Of course, Ajax will have their eyes on other clubs that may look to barge their way to the title. As well as PSV, Feyenoord are more than capable of challenging. The first game between the two sides comes on Matchday 16, midway through November with Ajax playing host, with the reverse on Matchday 28 in March.
Ajax did the double last season – a 2-0 win away and a 2-1 victory at home and they will be hoping for more of the same. Meanwhile, they host PSV on Matchday 32 at the start of May – the third game before the end of the season which could be cruicial.
