Which players have made the most appearances in the history of Ajax?

During the history of Ajax, many players have been long-serving stalwarts of the club, making hundreds of appearances in the famous red and white jerseys of the club from Amsterdam.

However, which players have made the most appearances for the Dutch giants in the club’s history?

Danny Blind

The defender is an Ajax legend, having made an impressive 493 appearances after moving to the club from Sparta Rotterdam in 1986.

Blind won the Eredivisie on five occasions and the Champions League in 1995, among other major prizes. The defender won all the UEFA competitions as a player, something only one of his compatriots (Arnold Muhren) has ever achieved.

He later went on to manage Ajax, but his tenure lasted just over a year, while he also later coached the Netherlands national team from 2015 until 2017.

Blind’s son, Daley, also came through the Ajax youth system and made over a century of appearances for the Dutch giants.

Sjaak Swart

The legendary Swart made 461 appearances for Ajax, scoring 160 goals, a goal tally that can only be beaten by football superstar and former teammate Johan Cruyff.

“Mr Ajax’ as he became known, played for the Dutch giants from 1956 until 1973, winning the Eredivisie seven times, the domestic Cup on five occasions, and, of course, the European Cup in three consecutive seasons from 1970 until 1973.

Wim Suurbier

Only Blind and Swart made more appearances for the Amsterdammers than Suurbier. The Eindhoven-born right-back spent most of his career in the European game with Ajax, making 456 appearances for the club between 1964 and 1977.

His time with the club was one of the most glorious eras for Ajax, as he was teammates with the likes of Cruyff, Swart and Krol as the team dominated the European Cup in the early 1970s.

During his career, the full-back also made 60 appearances for the Netherlands, including playing at the 1974 and 1978 World Cups, where the Oranje were beaten finalists in both tournaments.

Ruud Krol

The versatile Krol is a legend of the Dutch game, as he played a vital role in the Netherlands team during their much-vaunted 1970s period when they reached two World Cup finals.

However, at club level, he is best known for representing his home city club, Ajax, for 12 years, making 456 appearances.

Krol enjoyed a trophy-laden playing career with the club, winning six Eredivisie titles and, more notably, the European Cup on three occasions.

After his playing career ended, Krol returned to Amsterdam as the club’s assistant coach, a role he held from 2002 to 2005.

Frank de Boer

The defender was a product of the club’s youth academy and represented the Amsterdammers on 434 occasions in all competitions from 1988 until 1999, when he walked that well-trodden path to Catalan giants Barcelona, where he also appeared alongside twin brother Ronald.

De Boer enjoyed great success playing for Ajax as a player, winning the league on five occasions, as well as the Champions League in 1995.

The defender also enjoyed a long international career, making 112 appearances for the Oranje, and is the third most-capped player for the national team.

De Boer went on to manage both Ajax and the Netherlands national team. His spell as head coach in the Dutch capital was a successful one, as he guided Ajax to the Eredivisie title on four occasions.

Barry Hulshoff

The defender came through the club’s academy and featured for the Dutch giants from 1965 until 1977, making a total of 373 appearances for the Amsterdammers.

Hulshoff played a role in Ajax winning six domestic titles and three European Cups, amongst other silverware, during his playing career.

He returned to Amsterdam as head coach in 1988 but only stayed for one season before managing several Belgian clubs.

Piet Keizer

The winger is considered to be one of the best to have ever pulled on an Ajax jersey and a legend of the Dutch game.

In 358 appearances for the club in all competitions, he scored a creditable 125 goals and produced a further 121 assists for the Amsterdammers.

He was, of course, part of Ajax’s famous team of the 1960s and 1970s, lifting trophy after trophy and playing his part in the team’s ‘Total Football’ style of football.

Keizer replaced Johan Cruyff as Ajax’s captain in August 1973, a move which seemingly played a role in Cruyff’s decision to leave the Dutch club for Catalan giants Barcelona just a few weeks later.
