Ajax shutdown Fortuna with four

It was not an easy day for Fortuna Sittard at the office. The Sittard fans were sat there and made to think hard. Ajax gave the away fans nothing to cheer in a thoroughly professional domination at the Johan Cruijff arena.

It was the Stevie show.

Steven Burghuis was the stimulus for a fantastic team performance which was a perfect indicator of what this Ajax team is capable of. Yes – it’s a win agains the eleventh ranked side the Eredivisie. But it means so much more.

So much more to John Heitinga who wants to know what he’s doing in the summer. Does he stay? Does he enjoy a much needed break from the drama in Amsterdam?

The game

Steven Burghuis. You beauty. In the 6th minute, tjhe forward produces a scintillating finesse shot from the right flank after flicking the ball past left back Vita. The ball had more revolutions than a Graeme Swann offspinner, eventually hitting the left post and kissing the net. Chef’s kiss.

That was a superb effort from quite far out that even Anthony at Manchester United would be proud of.

In the 8th minute, Fortuna had a chance to equalise. Midfielder, Oyzakup delivered a darting cross into the box, only for winger Cordoba to get on the end of it and fluff a good chance from a close area.

Jorge Sanchez had one on a plate in the 13th minute. A cross into the box from a corner saw the head of Sanchez put the ball just wide of the goal.

Dusan Tadic had a better opportunity on his plate. In the 21st minute, he intercepted a horrible pass from the Sittard backline and even managed to dribble past the keeper. Fortuna centre-back, Guth sprinted towards the goal and headed the ball off the line to keep them within a whisker of the game.

Sanchez had another opportunity in the 22nd minute in the form of a header going way over the goal and kissing the netting on the other side.

Steven Berguis again! He found himself in a deadly position within the box in the 27th minute to rattle the top inside net with a venomous shot to shut the door on Fortuna Sittard.

John Heitinga looked on as the camera shot sat on him when opposition number eight Bistrovic was allowed to have a free shot way outside the box.

It was Steven Bergwijn this time to enter the score sheet. Ajax took a quick corner and helped the ball into his feet. He did the rest by thundering in a vicious ball into the top corner just outside the box. He got enough connection on the ball to have the side posts vibrate.

Kenneth Taylor found himself on the edge of the box to make it 4-0 in the 86th minute with a very clean finish to pass into the right hand side of the goal. Tidy.

Summary

Steven Berghuis dropped a bombshell of a performance in the absence of Mohammed Kudus and hopefully Ajax gain more momentum as they eye PSV for the KNVB final in their crosshairs.
