The last seven days were pretty much just as sh*t as all the other days this Ajax-summer so far. The football wasn’t good, we lost to Heracles, and the board of directors are massively f*cking up again. For those managerial f*ck-ups, there are a million possible excuses you could throw at us, but this failure is completely and utterly unacceptable and it’s about time someone is calling the board on their bullsh*t.
I don’t think anyone in the world blames Marc Overmars for Sánchez leaving. Those who do, are delusional and idiotic. Sánchez was always going to stay at the very maximum for two years. Him leaving now is something no-one who loves the club wants to happens, since he was our best centre-back since Alderweireld and Vertonghen left, but so be it. Sánchez never cared about Ajax, in the same way Milik never did. We were tools, stepping stones in their careers.
And there’s nothing wrong with that, nor is any of that Overmars’ fault. In fact, us receiving around fifty million euros for a defender is beyond unprecedented in Dutch club football. It’s an absolute goldmine and we should be sort of proud for being the first Dutch club to pull such a deal off. The problem is, however, once again the absolute lack of incoming transfers. The fact that the Sánchez-deal is not unexpected makes the absence of an adequate replacement absolutely laughable.
We are not in 2011 anymore. Ajax are an extremely wealthy club, who don’t need to receive cash in order to spend it. We should have gotten a centre back the second the transfer window opened and someone decided it was time to dump Riedewald to the highest bidder. But, instead of being proactive for f*cking once, Overmars did exactly the same as every year before: he waited until sh*t actually went down.
And now the start of the season has been terrible to say the least, the squad is too small and not good enough, there is not an adequate replacement to our best player and Mitchell Dijks, who didn’t even receive a goddamn squad number is our first choice left back, because Viergever (who’s not good enough as well) has to be moved to the centre, to be paired with another centre back, who just turned eighteen last week. Congratulations Matthijs (and Klaas-Jan).
Anyone who has ever spoken to me personally, will know I say this pretty much every six months: but this transfer window has been Overmars’ worst so far. The issues that needed solving were never this clear this early, the money-pile was never higher, but the mismanagement was never bigger. It is unbelievable there is still a system in place where the responsibilty can be held by someone who is this bad at his job. Something NEEDS to be done.
