Dennis Bergkamp’s goal at St. James Park against Newcastle United in 2002 was voted as the best goal in English Premier League history earlier this week by BBC sport readers.
Bergkamp started his career with Ajax at the age of 11, scoring 122 goals for the Amsterdammers before moving to Inter Milan and later Arsenal, where he became a London legend.
On March 2nd 2002, Bergkamp turned one Newcastle defender with an incredible flick before slotting home on goalkeeper Shay Given. Speaking about the goal to BBC Radio 5 Live, the renowned goalkeeper explained, “The whole build-up to the goal – Viera to Bergkamp, to Pires, back to Bergkamp – before we could blink it was in the back of the net. “It was a piece of magic. The finish was good and the touch was unbelievable. You’ll never see one like that again in the Premier League.”
