Ajax sign Wöber on four-year deal

Ajax have completed the signing of Maximilian Wöber. The 19-year-old central defender, who comes over from Rapid Vienna, has put pen to paper on a four-year contract with the Amsterdammers. The Austrian side will reportedly receive a transfer fee of around €7.5 million.

Wöber is delighted with his move to the Dutch capital: “It’s a big honor for me to be at one of the biggest clubs in Europe, with such a great history. It’s an unbelievable day for me.”

Ajax had already opened transfer talks over two months ago, but the Austrian defender was hesitant at first: “At first I wanted to stay at Rapid, but the situation changed after Davinson Sanchez was sold. There were a lot of sleepless nights for me because I had to think over my decision. It’s a big step for me to move away from Austria, where I was born, to Amsterdam. But now I am very excited to be here. Seeing De Ligt playing in a Europa League final at the age of 17 shows me I have a good future here.”
